Hurricane Andrew was one of only three hurricanes in recorded history to
strike the United States with Category 5 strength. When Andrew made its
first landfall in South Florida during the early morning hours of Aug.
24, 1992, the National Hurricane Center in Coral Gables recorded a wind
gust of 164 mph. The destruction Andrew left in its wake through the
southern suburbs of Miami was catastrophic.
