Second Straight Day of Violent Storms Near Chicago

For the second time in less than 24 hours, violent thunderstorms rolled through the Chicago area midday Saturday.
Chicago's western suburbs endured the worst of Saturday's thunderstorms.
One thunderstorm dropped penny-sized hail on the community of Oak Brook. Two miles to the west, a National Weather Service cooperative observer recorded 2.04 inches of rain in 2.5 hours.
Batavia was pounded by hail as large as nickels, while hail that ranged from the size of quarters to ping pongs slammed Sandwich, Ill., located to the southwest of Chicago.

Another, but stray shower or thunderstorm will follow for later Saturday afternoon.
Chicago will see a break in the storminess Saturday night before more thunderstorms return Sunday afternoon and night.

AccuWeather.com meteorologists will be monitoring the potential for yet another round of severe weather on Sunday, but current indications point toward this threat being greatest south and west of Chicago.
Setting the stage for these thunderstorms will be the warm and humid air that will send temperatures climbing into the upper 80s on Sunday.

Relief from the stormy and steamy conditions will finally come on Labor Day following the passage of a cold front. The dry and less humid weather will then hold through midweek.
