Heavy Rains From 99L Drench Belize and Mexico

By: Dr. Jeff Masters , 4:41PM,GMT on August 31,2014

Tropical wave 99L is spreading heavy rains over Belize and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula as the storm heads west-northwest at about 10 mph. Belize radar shows little rotation to 99L's echoes, and satellite loops on Sunday morning showed the heavy thunderstorm activity was poorly organized, with few low-level spiral bands. Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) were very warm, near 29.5°C (85°F), and wind shear was moderate, 10 - 20 knots. These conditions are favorable for development, but 99L will not be able to develop until it finishes crossing Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and emerges into the Gulf of Mexico's Bay of Campeche on Monday. The 8 am Sunday run of the SHIPS model predicted that conditions will remain favorable for development over Bay of Campeche during the remainder of the week, with mpderate wind shear, a moist atmosphere, and warm SSTs of 29.5°C (85°F.) None of our three reliable computer models for predicting tropical storm formation showed 99L developing in their Sunday morning runs, though. In their 8 am EDT Sunday Tropical Weather Outlook, NHC gave 99L 2-day and 5-day development odds of 30% and 50%, respectively. If a tropical storm does form in the Bay of Campeche, the most likely track would be to the west-northwest or northwest, with landfall occurring on the Mexican coast south of Texas on Wednesday. An Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft has been tasked to investigate 99L on Monday afternoon, if necessary.

Hurricane expert Steve Gregory has a more detailed look at the tropics in his latest blog post.

Death Valley ‘Sliding Rocks’ Mystery Resolved
Scientists have long puzzled over how huge rocks on Death Valley's Racetrack Playa managed to slide over the dry lake bed, leaving tracks hundred of feet long. The mystery was solved last week, as detailed by wunderground's weather historian, Christopher C. Burt, in his latest blog post.

Weather Underground National Forecast for Sunday,August 31,2014

By: nationalsummary , 10:13PM,GMT on August 30,2014

Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, August 31,2014

A cold front will extend from the Great Basin to the northern Plains on Sunday, while a separate cold front will stretch from the upper Mississippi Valley to the central Great Lakes.

A strong area of low pressure will move across the northern Plains on Sunday. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system will extend over the northern and central Plains, the central Rockies and the Great Basin. As warm, humid air streams northward from the Gulf of Mexico, it will collide with this frontal boundary to initiate strong to severe thunderstorms over the nation’s midsection. Severe thunderstorms will be possible over Kansas, Nebraska, northwest Missouri, Iowa, eastern South Dakota, Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. Additionally, scattered showers will trail this system and linger over parts of the Pacific Northwest and the Intermountain West. High pressure will keep conditions mostly clear across the Southwest on Sunday. Temperatures are forecast to exceed 100 degrees across the region.

Meanwhile, an abundance of moisture will spread across the eastern third of the country, triggering rain and thunderstorms over the Gulf Coast, the Southeast, the Tennessee Valley, the Ohio Valley, the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. Temperatures are forecast to range between the 80s and 90s across the East Coast.

Heavy Storms Target NYC, DC, Harrisburg Sunday

By , Senior Meteorologist
September 1,2014; 12:35AM,EDT

Much to the dismay of those with holiday plans, the surge of higher humidity into the Northeast is also opening the door for heavy thunderstorms to return.
Heavy thunderstorms will ignite in the corridor from western Massachusetts to eastern Pennsylvania and far northern Virginia through Sunday evening. Residents in this same corridor are noticing a significant increase in humidity from earlier in the weekend.
A more widespread severe weather outbreak, including a few tornadoes, will commence across the North Central U.S. at the same time.
The threat for the heavy thunderstorms in the Northeast includes Pittsfield and Springfield, Massachusetts; New York City and Poughkeepsie, New York; Trenton, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Along the I-95 corridor, the heaviest thunderstorms will hold off until the late afternoon and evening hours.
"There will be locally severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, but heavy rain is the greater concern," stated AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Frank Strait when discussing the dangers from the thunderstorms.
Worse than forcing outdoor plans indoors, the downpours may trigger flash flooding. Motorists will also face hazards from the downpours in the form of dramatically reduced visibility and an increased danger of vehicles hydroplaning at highway speeds.

Drivers planning to travel along stretches of Interstates 76, 78, 80, 84, 87, 90 and 95 should prepare for some delays and slowdowns. Airline passengers may also encounter delays.
All residents and visitors are urged to keep an eye to the sky and monitor the AccuWeather.com MinuteCast™ to stay ahead of any impending downpours as holiday picnics, parades, sporting events and other holiday festivities are being enjoyed.

Lightning strikes and localized downpours will remain concerns as a couple of showers and thunderstorms continue to create headaches for those with outdoor plans across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic through the remainder of the holiday weekend.
Remember, you are close enough to be struck by lightning if you hear thunder.
The good news is that Labor Day will not be a washout with stretches of dry weather.

Minneapolis and Rochester, Minnesota, as well as La Crosse, Wisconsin, will actually face two rounds of violent thunderstorms. A line of thunderstorms with strong winds and hail will swing through Sunday afternoon before the main severe weather event follows at night.
"In addition to the potential for a few tornadoes, many of the storms will bring the full spectrum risk of severe weather, including damaging wind gusts, large hail, frequent lightning strikes and flash flooding," according to AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
Those attending picnics, parades, sporting events or any other holiday celebrations should have a weather radio handy or make sure cell phone notifications for storm-related watches and warnings are turned on.

AccuWeather.com MinuteCast™ will also help keep you ahead of impending severe weather.
"The tornado threat will be most problematic from late afternoon through early evening," added AccuWeather Enterprise Solutions Expert Senior Meteorologist Scott Breit.
That puts central and eastern Nebraska and western Iowa at greatest risk for tornadoes to touch down and threaten lives and property. Omaha and Pilger, Nebraska, site of the deadly twin tornadoes from earlier this summer, lie in this zone.
Breit expects the tornado danger to evolve into more of a straight-line wind threat overnight Sunday, likely before the violent thunderstorms reach Minneapolis and Cedar Rapids.
The severe weather risk in terms of damaging winds should wane for a time late Sunday night and Monday morning. Blinding downpours could still remain as the thunderstorms push into the Upper Midwest and disrupt outdoor holiday plans.

A new round of severe weather is expected to ignite as the Labor Day holiday weekend comes to a close Monday afternoon from southwestern Michigan and northern Illinois to Missouri.
This includes Kalamazoo, Michigan; South Bend, Indiana; Chicago and Springfield, Illinois, and St. Louis and Columbia, Missouri. The danger will reach Indianapolis Monday evening, when isolated severe thunderstorms will also extend back along the border of Kansas and Oklahoma.
Damaging winds, hail and flooding downpours are the greatest concerns on Labor Day. Any tornado touching down would be an isolated event, but it only takes one tornado to turn the holiday into a nightmare for a family and/or community.
Later Monday night, the severe weather danger will transition to a greater flood threat as thunderstorms will track repeatedly over the corridor from central Missouri to western Ohio. This includes St. Louis and Indianapolis.
Throughout the Labor Day holiday weekend, anyone spending time outdoors is reminded to seek shelter as soon as thunder is heard. You are then close enough to be struck by lightning.

Weather Underground National Forecast for Saturday,August 30,2014

By: nationalsummary , 10:13PM,GMT on August 29,2014

Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday,August 30,2014

A low pressure system will move across the upper Mississippi Valley on Saturday, while a separate low pressure system will dip southward over southern Canada.

An area of low pressure will dip southward over south central Canada and the upper Intermountain West on Saturday. As warm, humid air interacts with this system, strong to severe thunderstorms will develop over the north central portion of the country. Severe thunderstorms will be possible over northeast Montana, northwest South Dakota and western North Dakota. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. Scattered thunderstorms will also be possible over the northern and central Rockies. An onshore flow from the Pacific will bring a chance of showers to the Pacific Northwest, while high pressure will keep the remainder of the West Coast clear of precipitation.

Meanwhile, a strong low pressure system will drift northeastward over the upper Mississippi Valley and the western Great Lakes on Saturday. Widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected over the middle and upper Mississippi Valley, as well as the upper Midwest and the Tennessee Valley. To the south, a tropical disturbance over the western Gulf of Mexico will bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to the western and central Gulf Coast. Isolated thunderstorms are also forecast to develop over Florida and the southern Mid-Atlantic. The Northeast will stay mostly clear of wet weather.

BREAKING: Lightning, Heavy Rain End Idaho-Florida Football Game After 1 Play

By Mark Leberfinger, AccuWeather.com Staff Writer
August 31,2014; 12:03AM,EDT

See larger image below.
The Swamp turned into a swamp Saturday night as strong storms moved through the Gainesville, Florida, area.
The weather forced the termination of the Idaho-Florida college football game at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium after just one play.
More than 8,800 lightning strikes were recorded around Florida between 7 p.m. and midnight local time, AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Edward Vallee said.
Game officials waited almost three hours as lightning strikes continued with an 8-mile radius of the stadium, forcing them to keep extending the delay.
Idaho kicked off to Florida to start the season opener for both teams at 9:50 p.m., but another lightning strike occurred inside the radius.

"It's unfortunate that the weather didn't cooperate for tonight's season opener," Gators Coach Will Muschamp said, according to GatorZone.com. "After long discussions with the head referee, it was determined that the field conditions were too dangerous for the student-athletes."
With high pressure off Gainesville's east, the flow was east to west. With that in mind, a sea breeze boundary (a boundary that is created due to a land-sea temperature contrast) formed in the East Coast early in the afternoon and pushed inland near Gainesville during the evening, Vallee said.
"Along this boundary, air is forced upward and combines with the tropical airmass (dew points in the middle 70s) that allow slow moving, heavy rain-producing storms to form," Vallee said. "The precipitation began at 6:27 p.m and intensified quickly as it reached the Swamp. Gainesville Regional Airport received 1.81 inches of rain between 6:27 and 10:00 p.m."

The storms left the playing surface unplayable at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
The game could be rescheduled, the University of Florida said.
At least two other games were delayed by lightning during the opening weekend of college football in the United States. The games between Montana and Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming, and Temple and Vanderbilt at Nashville, Tennessee, were resumed and completed after the delays.

Heat, Humidity to Kick Off September in the East

By Brian Lada, Meteorologist
August 30,2014; 10:27PM,EDT

A change in the weather pattern will signal warmer, more summerlike conditions across the East Coast to bring in the new month.
The first few days of September may feel more like the first few days of July from Baltimore to Boston with above-normal temperatures and an uptick in humidity.
Residents across the Northeast thinking about closing their pools early may want to wait just a bit longer to take advantage of the warmer weather on the way.
This pattern change will also give beachgoers another opportunity to enjoy the East Coast beaches before the summer weather is gone for good.

Temperatures are forecast to near the 90-degree mark as far north as New York City during the first part of the week with AccuWeather.com RealFeel® temperatures nearing 100 F during the afternoon hours.
Showers and thunderstorms are also projected to dot the Northeast on both Monday and Tuesday during the peak of the heat.
"We're going into a warm, moist weather pattern but nobody is going to have widespread or steady rain," said AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams.

While the thunderstorms over the Northeast are not expected to become severe, they can still be hazardous, producing frequent lightning and heavy downpours.
This can be enough to put holiday festivities on pause until the storm has passed. If you are in the outdoors and a thunderstorm is approaching, you should seek shelter until the storm has passed.

Looking ahead to the second half of the week, the heat is forecast to gradually ease, but never quite disappear completely.
According to AccuWeather Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok, "The pattern through the first half of September in the East will generally favor more days with above-average warmth, than days with below-average warmth."
Even though high temperatures along the I-95 corridor will retreat back into the mid- to upper 80s, this is still 5 to 10 degrees above normal when compared to typical highs for the first week of September.

AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski adds to Pastelok by saying, "The pattern may guide some tropical systems that develop in the Atlantic toward the southern part of the United States, the Caribbean and Mexico."
One such tropical system may even develop as soon as next week, tracking from the Caribbean towards the Gulf of Mexico.

Harrisburg: Summer Warmth to Hold Beyond Labor Day

By , Senior Meteorologist
August 30,2014; 10:23PM,EDT

Labor Day weekend traditionally marks the unofficial end to summer, but the weather has another idea in mind around Harrisburg with a prolonged stretch of summer warmth underway.
After the holiday weekend started on a warmer and more humid note than recent days, Sunday and Labor Day are shaping up to be even stickier.
Temperatures will soar into the middle 80s each day. When humidity is factored in, AccuWeather.com RealFeel® temperatures will peak well in the 90s during the afternoon.
Such heat will create hazards for those engaging in strenuous labor or sporting events, as well as the elderly and those with respiratory issues.

A shower or thunderstorm will be around to occasionally cool off the city and its suburbs Sunday afternoon and then again on Monday.

While the cooling effect will be welcome, those with picnics, parades or other outdoor activities will experience disruptions if a shower or thunderstorm arrives at an inopportune time.

The good news is that the second half of the holiday weekend will not be a washout. There will be stretches of dry weather. Residents and visitors will just have to keep an eye to the sky and AccuWeather.com MinuteCast™.
Remember, you are close enough to be struck by lightning if you hear thunder.
The summer warmth will not come to an end with Labor Day. Instead, temperatures are set to soar further and surpass the 90-degree mark on Tuesday.
"Looking ahead to the second half of the week, the heat is forecast to gradually ease, but never quite disappear completely," stated AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Brian Lada.
