Weather Underground midday recap for Thursday,January 2,2014
A cold frontal boundary stretched from the lower Mississippi Valley to
the Mid-Atlantic on Thursday, while an area of high pressure continued
to build over the north central U.S.
An active weather system pushed across the eastern third of the country
on Thursday as a cold front extended from Mississippi to Ohio. Winter
storm warnings and winter weather advisories were issued across a
handful of states in the Ohio Valley and Northeast due to snowy
conditions across the region. Fort Hunter, N.Y., reported a midday total
of 5.50 inches of snow, while Bradford, Pa., reported a midday total of
5.0 inches of snow. Cold, blustery conditions also pushed across the
northern tier of the country as a high pressure system ushered an arctic
air mass over the upper Midwest and Great Lakes. Crane Lake, Minn.,
recorded a morning low of -43 degrees, while Park Rapids, Minn.,
recorded a morning low of -36 degrees with a wind chill factor of -50
degrees.
Meanwhile, several states across the Southeast experienced rainy weather
on Thursday due to an onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico.
Gainesville, Fla., reported a midday total of 1.88 inches of rain, while
Saint Simons Island, Ga., recorded a midday total of 1.31 inches of
rain.
Out west, a low pressure system ushered showers across western
Washington, while light snow moved through the Cascades. The remainder
of the West Coast stayed clear of wet weather on Thursday.
