A cold frontal boundary extended from New Mexico to the Mid-Atlantic on
Thursday, while a ridge of high pressure continued to build over the
eastern Pacific.
A cold frontal boundary stretched across the southern Plains, the Gulf
Coast and along the East Coast on Thursday. Freezing rain and winter
weather advisories were issued across Texas while hard freezing warnings
were issued along the Gulf Coast as a cold air mass accompanied the
frontal boundary. Dallam, Texas, reported a midday total of 1.5 inches
of snow, while Cimarron, Okla., reported a midday total of 1.0 inches of
snow. To the north, extremely cold weather swept across the northern
Plains and the upper Midwest as high pressure was situated over South
Dakota. International Falls, Minn., recorded a morning low of -36
degrees with a windchill factor of -49 degrees, while Park Rapids,
Minn., recorded a morning low of -33 degrees with a windchill factor of
-51 degrees. Cold, blustery conditions also moved across the Northeast
on Thursday, while a low pressure system drove light snow across parts
of the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic.
The West Coast avoided precipitation as a ridge of high pressure
continued to build over the eastern Pacific. Warm, dry conditions
persisted across the Southwest, as Palm Springs, Calif., recorded a
midday high of 75 degrees, while Corona, Calif., recorded a midday high
of 72 degrees.
