Weather Underground midday recap for Tuesday,January 28,2014

A cold frontal boundary extended across the Gulf of Mexico and Florida on Tuesday, while a surge of moisture began to move across the Pacific Northwest.

A cold front interacted with a moist air mass along the Gulf Coast on Tuesday, which triggered an active weather system along the Gulf Coast states and the Southeast. Winter weather advisories were issued in a handful of states, as freezing rain, sleet and snow moved across the region. Gilmer, Ga., reported a midday total of 1.8 inches of snow, while La Salle, La., reported a midday total of 4.0 inches of snow. Snow also moved across several Mid-Atlantic states on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, very cold, blustery conditions swept across the northern tier of the country as an arctic air mass lingered over the region. Wind chill advisories were issued in the northern Plains, the upper Midwest, the Ohio Valley and the Northeast. Longville, Minn., recorded a morning low of -34 degrees with a wind chill factor of -47 degrees, while Black River Falls, Wis., recorded a morning low of -33 degrees with a wind chill factor of -46 degrees.

Out west, light snow moved across parts of the Cascades and the northern Rockies, while showers began to move over Washington and Oregon. The Southwest stayed clear of precipitation on Tuesday due to high pressure over the area. Midday temperatures ranged between the 60s and 70s across the southern California and Arizona deserts. .
