After an intense heatwave this past week left many places in northern Argentina and Uruguay topping out near or just above the century mark (approximately 38°C) for the first time this summer, another blast of heat and high humidity will build this weekend and into early next week.
Downtown Buenos Aires reached 100°F degrees (approximately 38°C) on Thursday which is about 15 degrees (9°C) above average for late December. Add to that an unseasonably humid air mass and AccuWeather Real Feel values peaked at around 115°F (46.1°C).
On Christmas Day, the heat sent tens of thousands of people to area rivers and lakes to try and beat the heat. Unfortunately for one community along the Parana River in Argentina, the high number of swimmers due to the searing heat were met by a school of piranhas which ended up injuring around 70 people.

After a brief respite from the scorching heat on Friday in Buenos Aires thanks to isolated showers and thunderstorms, temperatures in the upper 90s to near 100 (mid 30s to near 40 C) along with high humidity will once again be in the forecast this weekend into Monday and perhaps Tuesday.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will fire in the late afternoon and evenings hours on Saturday and especially Sunday, providing some natural relief to the heat. Given the hot and unstable air mass, any storms that fire this weekend can briefly turn severe and contain damaging winds and heavy downpours.
There is some long term relief from the heat in sight for Buenos Aires and northern Argentina beginning as early as Wednesday and continuing through the end of next week as a cold front pushes up from the south.
High temperatures Wednesday will struggle to hit 90 as the cold front crosses, and highs in the lower 80s are expected for next Thursday and Friday.
