Passengers stranded on a ship in the Southern Ocean after thick ice trapped the ship on Christmas Eve are now close to rescue.
CNN reported that help was about two days away on Christmas. Icebreaker ships are expected to help the currently immobile cruise vessel break out of the ice. The sent "Snow Dragon", a Chinese icebreaker, is expected to reach the ship's crew and passengers by late Friday or early Saturday.
Despite being summer in the Southern Hemisphere, much of the Southern Ocean remains flooded with ice.
A storm system will be moving through the Southern Ocean, and already brought, blizzard-like conditions to those on the ship. Now that the Snow Dragon is nearer, the icebreaker will be dealing with even thicker ice.

Why is Sea Ice Increasing in Antarctica?
The ship was on its way to French base Dumont D'Urville in Antarctica, said Time. Explorers and tourists were making the trip in remembrance of the Douglas Mawson Antarctic exploration that took place 100 years ago.
