Flooding to return to United Kingdom as chill lingers

Rain will fall across the United Kingdom on Tuesday and Wednesday raising concerns for new flooding problems.
Rain will spread into Northern Ireland and Scotland late Monday night into Tuesday and reach northern and western Wales as well as northern England during the afternoon.
Downpours and strong winds will lash Northern Ireland and western Scotland where 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) of rain and wind gusts over 50 mph (85 km/h) are expected.

The heaviest rain will fall across across northern England and Wales on Tuesday night and Wednesday. Downpours will spread into Southwest England on Wednesday.
Total rainfall of 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) is expected in these areas with locally up to 75 mm (3 inches) in Wales and the northwest of England.

These downpours will cause slower travel and, in some areas, result in road closures due to rising water levels.
The storm is expected to weaken and stall over England from Wednesday night into Thursday bringing additional rainfall to areas from Plymouth and London northward to Manchester and York.
Rainfall is not expected to be heavy, limiting chances for renewed flooding from the River Thames around London. The river burst its banks last week following heavy rain, leading to flooding throughout the city.

As colder air slowly builds in from the north, the rain may mix with snow and change to snow across the higher elevations of the Midlands on Wednesday night and Thursday. Minor accumulations up to 2 cm (1 inch) are possible.
This colder air will slowly move southward bringing the potential for some wet snowflakes to the southern U.K. including Greater London on Thursday.
