A low pressure system will affect the Northeast on Thursday, while high pressure builds over the western half of the country.
A robust area of low pressure will transition northeastward from the eastern Great Lakes to southeast Canada. This system will pack moderate to heavy precipitation and gusty winds. Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph can be expected across portions of the upper Midwest, the northern Mid-Atlantic and New England. Light to moderate snow showers will spread across the upper Midwest. Locally heavy snow will impact the central Appalachians, northeast Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania and southwest New York. Snow accumulations could range between 2 to 6 inches for the aforementioned states. A mixture of rain and snow will also develop from the Tennessee Valley to New England. High pressure will dry conditions out across the Deep South and the Southeast.
Meanwhile, a pair of high pressure systems will build over the upper Intermountain West and the eastern Pacific. A dry weather pattern will prevail across the Plains, the Intermountain West, the Pacific Northwest and the Southwest. Temperatures will spike 10 to 20 degrees above normal over the Southwest. There will be a slight chance of late evening rain over western Washington as a cold frontal boundary approaches the Northwest.
