WeatherFanatics: REPORTS: Snow, Ice Cut Power to More Than 80,000 in DC Area

As the storm that sent icy mixes from the Ohio Valley to the mid-Atlantic over the weekend winds down, lingering travel problems continue for a few major roadways and airports.
Schools in Frederick County, Md., were canceled Monday due to the wintry blast, while public schools in Washington, D.C., had a two-hour delay. Meanwhile, thousands of customers in the Washington, D.C., area are without power, following the snow and ice.
"Temperatures are continuing to rise above freezing, so most of the icy threat is over for now," said AccuWeather.com Meterologist Evan Duffey. "There will be some lingering slick spots in some areas."
A fatal crash occurred on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Sunday, killing at least one person. As many as 50 vehicles were involved in the pileup, reported about 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to WPVI-TV. The road re-opened more than seven hours later.

10:35 a.m. EST Monday: The Massachusetts Department of Transportation lists icy road conditions across portions of the state, including areas on I-95 and around Boston.
9:40 a.m. EST Monday: FlightStats is listing excessive delays at Philadelphia, Ronald reagan, Washington Dulles airports, significant delays at Richmond, Boston Logan, Albany, Charleston, Charlotte, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Atlanta airports.
9:00 a.m. EST Monday: Dominion Electric customers without power are just under 81,000 in Virginia, with more than 66,000 of those around the DC metro area.
8:30 a.m. EST Monday: Connecticut Department of Transportation lists accidents, icy roads and traffic delays across most of the state, including I-84 and I-95.

7:50 a.m. EST Monday: More than 58,000 Dominion Electric customers are now without power in Virginia, with more than 40,000 in the Washington, D.C., area. Nearly 11,000 Baltimore Gas and Electric customers are without power in Maryland, with 6,592 out in Baltimore County and 2,652 out in Harford County.
7:20 a.m. EST Monday: The Federal Aviation Administration is warning of delays going into Reagan and Philadelphia airports with its second-highest delay rating.
6:50 a.m. EST Monday: Just under 50,000 Dominion Electric customers are without power across Virginia. Most are in the Northern Virginia region, with 36,246 affected.
6:30 a.m. EST Monday: The New York Department of Transportation lists snowy and icy conditions for most of its roads, with some areas only listed as wet as rain falls across parts of the state. The worst conditions are across Saratoga Springs, which are classified as being "severely snow/ice covered."

6:05 p.m. EST Sunday: The heaviest snow, which hit the Philadelphia area, is pushing offshore with some snow around New York City and Long Island, AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Brian Edwards said. There is a chance of patchy freezing drizzle in eastern Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore over the next couple hours.
A band of moisture in the Tennessee Valley will move into the mid-Atlantic and southern New England states later tonight, Edwards said. There will be an eventual changeover to rain in Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City.
5:50 p.m. EST Sunday: Departure delays of more than one hour continue at Philadelphia, Teterboro and Newark airports, the FAA said. Chicago O'Hare International Airport is experiencing delays averaging 59 minutes.

2:34 p.m. EST Sunday: The heaviest snow band has shifted out of the Philadelphia area and is now to the south from Elkton, Md., to Barnegat Light, N.J., AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said. There will be periodic snow through 6 p.m. in the Philadelphia area.
2:24 p.m. EST Sunday: Pennsylvania Turnpike institutes 22-mile detour around the site of a "major accident" between Downingtown and Morgantown, Pa., the turnpike commission said on its website.

10:50 a.m. EST Sunday: The Maryland State Police (MSP) has declared that a snow emergency plan is in place for north central portions of the state, including Westminster, Frederick and Hagerstown. They issued this with input from the Maryland State Highway Administration. Once a snow emergency is declared, the law requires certain precautions:
-Prohibited parking on roads and streets designated as snow emergency routes; and
-The use of snow tires/chains (most cars now use all weather tires, so changing to "snow" tires is unnecessary).
