A low pressure system over the Great Lakes brought snow to the region on
Tuesday, from the upper Midwest through the Northeast. A cold front
extended over the Midwest and into the Ohio River valley, which kicked
up some heavy snow across Illinois and Indiana, with heavier lake effect
snow in southwestern Michigan. Snowfall totals ranged from 2 to 4
inches in most areas, with up to 6.2 inches reported at Beaver Island,
Michigan. Strong winds developed along the back side of this system with
highest winds up to 64 mph reported at Livingston, Montana.
At the same time, another trough of low pressure moved over the
Appalachians and into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. Heaviest
snowfall totals by midday on Tuesday reached up to 2 and 3 inches for
parts of Pennsylvania and New York state. Precipitation increased across
the Central and Northern Appalachians as a cold front associated with
this system approached the region. Winter weather advisories and winter
storm warnings have been issued across most of the Northeast.
Elsewhere, high pressure dominated the rest of the nation with dry and
mild temperatures. This spread warmer air across the country from the
South, allowing for temperatures to gradually rise from west to east
across the nation.
