WeatherFanatics: LIVE: Freezing Rain Spreads Across Mid-Atlantic

A potent winter storm will continue to spread an icy mix from the Ohio Valley to the mid-Atlantic and Northeast through the remainder of the weekend, while freezing drizzle is creating problems over the south-central U.S.
A fatal crash occurred on the Pennsylvania Turnpike with at least one person dead. As many as 50 vehicles were involved in the pile-up, reported about 12:30 p.m. Sunday, according to WPVI-TV. The road re-opened more than seven hours later.
The icy mix and freezing drizzle are making travel treacherous. Enough freezing rain threatens to coat parts of the Ohio Valley, mid-Atlantic and Northeast for some power outages and tree damage.
The heaviest icing, and widespread threat for power outages and tree damage, will target Kentucky and the I-81 corridor of Virginia. For more information, please read this news story.

At the same time, nuisance snow will push through the Upper Midwest and accumulate a general 1 to 3 inches.

7:41 p.m. EST Sunday: Pennsylvania Turnpike has re-opened westbound between Downingtown and Morgantown after fatal crash, the turnpike commission reports.
7:25 p.m. EST Sunday: Flight delays are almost three hours at O'Hare International Airport, the FAA said.

6:05 p.m. EST Sunday: The heaviest snow, which hit the Philadelphia area, is pushing offshore with some snow around New York City and Long Island, AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Brian Edwards said. There is a chance of patchy freezing drizzle in eastern Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore over the next couple hours.
A band of moisture in the Tennessee Valley will move into the mid-Atlantic and southern New England states later tonight, Edwards said. There will be an eventual changeover to rain in Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City.
5:50 p.m. EST Sunday: Departure delays of more than one hour continue at Philadelphia, Teterboro and Newark airports, the FAA said. Chicago O'Hare International Airport is experiencing delays averaging 59 minutes.

2:34 p.m. EST Sunday: The heaviest snow band has shifted out of the Philadelphia area and is now to the south from Elkton, Md., to Barnegat Light, N.J., AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said. There will be periodic snow through 6 p.m. in the Philadelphia area.
2:24 p.m. EST Sunday: Pennsylvania Turnpike institutes 22-mile detour around the site of a "major accident" between Downingtown and Morgantown, Pa., the turnpike commission said on its website.

10:50 a.m. EST Sunday: The Maryland State Police (MSP) has declared that a snow emergency plan is in place for north central portions of the state, including Westminster, Frederick and Hagerstown. They issued this with input from the Maryland State Highway Administration. Once a snow emergency is declared, the law requires certain precautions:
-Prohibited parking on roads and streets designated as snow emergency routes; and
-The use of snow tires/chains (most cars now use all weather tires, so changing to "snow" tires is unnecessary).
10:30 a.m. EST Sunday: AccuWeather.com meteorologists are concerned for around 3 inches of snow in Philadelphia today; higher amounts will occur westward along the Maryland-Pennsylvania border.
