Icy Mix Following Heavy Snow in DC, Baltimore Area

Heavy snow that unloaded on the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore areas on Sunday is being followed by an icy mix.
After emerging from north-central West Virginia, a band of heavy snow took aim at the northern suburbs of Washington, D.C., and Baltimore while grazing the cities themselves.
The snow band produced a widespread swath of 4 to 8 inches of snow was measured with locally higher totals.

As of 8 p.m. EST Sunday, Newark, Del., sat at the top of the snow's totals list with 12 inches.
While the heavy snow has ended, an icy mix of sleet and freezing rain is now falling.
Travel will remain hazardous, while airline passengers endure more delays, cancellations and headaches.
Shoveling will become a much harder task to complete due to the icy mix further weighing the snow down.

The arrival of warmer air late will lead to a changeover to plain rain later Sunday night, but a slow Monday morning commute may still result due to wet roads, reduced visibility and low-hanging clouds.
More rain and snow could return to Washington, D.C., as soon as Tuesday.
