After the rains stopped in South Carolina, many people with disabilities were reported to be stranded in their homes, while others have managed to evacuate to shelters. After site visits conducted yesterday by Julia Barrett-Martinelli, the director of AccessAbility, Charleston's center for Independent Living, we know that some of those shelters are not fully accessible.
We're already working with emergency management agencies to help ensure that those still stranded are brought to safety. We'll be working with the Red Cross shelters to ensure they're accessible to all, and as always, we're ready to replace lost or damaged medical equipment. Portlight will continue to lend a hand to the disability community in our home state for as long as we're needed.
If you're in South Carolina and you'd like to volunteer with us please email Operations Manager, Shari Myers, shari@portlight.org. Our work isn't possible without you, and we're eternally grateful for your continued commitment and support!

California Fires Sheltering update.
With the continuing battle of the forest fires in California, Portlight has been observing, advising and helping to meet the needs of those disabled and others as many are in rural areas.
After a review of the recent efforts there, portlight and the Office of Access and Functional Needs of the California Office of Emergency Services are doubling their efforts to ensure that all needs are being met in a timeful and caring way.
We want to thank the extended Portlight Family for all you do as well as those who support us financially and with volunteering too.
