Boston: Midweek Soaking to Precede Dry End to October

The Boston area will face a bout of soaking rain and gusty winds at midweek before dry weather--the theme of this October--settles back in to end the month.
Umbrellas and rain gear have not gotten much use this October around Boston, but that will change beginning later Wednesday.
The arrival of a potent storm system, which has tapped into moisture from once-Tropical Rainstorm Patricia, will cause the most significant rainfall in weeks to pour down late Wednesday into Wednesday night.

"Boston will start the day dry, but rain will quickly overspread the area during the evening commute and can be heavy," stated AccuWeather Meteorologist Alyson Hoegg.
Rainfall will generally total 1-2 inches with locally higher amounts.
"Localized flooding is also possible in low-lying and poor drainage areas with the heavy rain over a short time period," added Hoegg. That is especially true where leaves are covering storm drains. The combination of leaves and wet roads will also create slick conditions for motorists.

Despite any flooding and disruptions to travel and outdoor plans, the rain will be beneficial. Boston has only recorded 0.65 of an inch of rain this month, as of Tuesday. That is 20 percent below normal.
Winds will also increase Wednesday into Wednesday night, leading to gusts of 35-50 mph Wednesday night into early Thursday. The strongest winds will whip places toward the coast.
Such winds could easily toss around loose Halloween decorations with the strongest gusts threatening to cause sporadic tree damage and power outages. Localized coastal flooding is a concern, especially at high tide.

The passage of the system's cold front will sweep away the steadier rain for Thursday, but the arrival of the noticeably cooler air will not come until the night. As a result, the return of some sunshine and gusty southwesterly winds will help boost temperatures back into the 70s.
Once the cooler air finally works into the area, near to slightly below normal temperatures are expected Friday into Saturday as an area of high pressure builds overhead.
A lack of rain for Halloween Saturday evening will definitely be good news for trick-or-treaters.
