Tropical Downpours Continue Over Southern, Eastern India Through This Weekend

Tropical downpours across southern and eastern India are expected to persist through this weekend.
The North Indian Ocean is now entering its second peak of the tropical season. This uptick in tropical lows occurs during the months of October and November, following a period of less activity during the monsoon season that started in late May.
A large area of low pressure near Sri Lanka will be the primary weather concern into this weekend.

This large area of unsettled weather will split into two organized areas of low pressure through Friday.
The first low will track northward over the Bay of Bengal while the second tracks westward toward India.
A northward track will keep one area of low pressure areas over the Bay of Bengal and also cause the heaviest rainfall to remain over the bay with occasional downpours along the northeast coast of India through Sunday.
Other than southern India, where downpours will advance well inland, rainfall will remain within 80 km (50 miles) of the coast from Kakinada to Digha. Rainfall will generally average less than 25 mm (1 inch). Areas from Puri to Ratanpur are the most likely to get 25 mm (1 inch) or more of rainfall from Friday into Saturday.
This tropical moisture will surge northeastward this weekend to bring the threat for heavy rainfall and flooding to parts of Bangladesh and Myanmar.

The second area of low pressure will drift westward reaching the coast of India on Friday then cross southern India over the weekend causing frequent downpours.
Showers and thunderstorms will become more widespread across the southern third of India this weekend, mainly impacting areas from Mangaluru and Chennai southward.
Rainfall will generally average 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) across southern India through this weekend; however, locally higher amounts are possible between Thoothukudi and Chennai on the east coast and Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi on the west coast.
To the west of India, another tropical system formed in the Arabian Sea early Thursday morning local time.
This tropical system will have no direct impacts on India as steering winds from the east will result in a track toward the Arabian Peninsula.
