Storm causes power outages, floods streets, damages buildings

Flash flooding and strong storms hit the Phoenix area Monday night, which left some roadways flooded and knocked out power to tens of thousands.

More than 55,000 homes lost power during the storms that brought down power lines, sparked a few fires and left motorists stranded on flooded roads, according to the Associated Press.
Monsoonal moisture led to the flare-up of numerous showers and thunderstorms in southern Arizona late Monday, said weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce. Areas near Tucson also reported more than an inch of rainfall Monday night, according to National Weather Service reports.
Localized rainfall amounts of more than an inch were reported in the Phoenix area, along with strong winds gusts and hail up to a half-inch in diameter. Phoenix Sky Harbor airport recorded a wind gust to 61 mph.

The storms also led to a 90-minute ground stop at the Phoenix airport, which lasted roughly from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. local time, KPHO.com reported. A terminal roof was damaged by the storms at the airport, the AP said.
Phoenix Fire Station No. 1 sustained damage during the storms, but nobody was injured at the firehouse, KPHO.com added. Fox 10 Phoenix said Phoenix Zoo will be closed Tuesday due to storm damage, but all animals were unharmed.

Some residents, like pastor Jamie Holt, welcomed the rain, even though his car's interior got soaked because he forgot to put the windows up during a meeting in central Phoenix.
“I left the windows down,” he told the Arizona Republic. “I just heard crazy rain. I love it. I’m glad that it’s finally raining.”
There were no reports of serious injuries.
