16 Best Weather Images of August 2015

Meteorologists are often wowed by various satellite, radar and computer model weather images every month, and August 2015 was no different.

Given August is typically an active month in the tropics, that's the common theme you'll see in this month's collection. Our first image begins with Super Typhoon Soudelor, which rapidly intensified after causing widespread damage in Saipan (video above) to start the month.

Super Typhoon Soudelor

Soudelor when it was a super typhoon Aug. 3 at 12:33 p.m. EDT. Maximum sustained winds topped out at 180 mph that afternoon, making Soudelor the strongest storm on earth so far in 2015. The image is from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor aboard NASA’s Suomi NPP satellite.

Hurricane Hilda Hits a Wall of Dry Air

This water vapor satellite image from Aug. 11 shows Hurricane Hilda (right) in contrast to a pocket of dry air in yellow and orange (left) that eventually helped to weaken the system.

Tropical Rains Flood Tampa Area

The dark red and black colors in this image show deep convection (rain and thunderstorms) associated with Invest 95-L in early August. The tropical system brought heavy rain and significant flooding to the Tampa area on Aug. 3.

Wildfire Smoke and a Vortex

This image from Aug. 17 shows two things, wildfire smoke in northern California (milky tan shadings at top), and a vortex in the low clouds (circled) farther south along the California coast.

Former Super Typhoon Atsani in the North Pacific

Atsani was one of the twin typhoons we tracked in the west Pacific along with Goni in middle August. This image shows Atsani after it made the transition to a powerful non-tropical low pressure system in the north Pacific on Aug. 25. The red and orange shadings show a punch of dry air wrapping into the strong area of low pressure.

Strong Low Pressure Near Chile

This image shows a potent low pressure system approaching the coast of Chile on Aug. 7.  The storm brought unusual rains to a normally dry part of Chile, resulting in deadly flooding and mudslides in the town of Tocopilla. Along the Chile coast, images from social media showed that waves generated by the storm caused coastal destruction near Valaparaiso.

Narrow Cloud Stripe Across the Australian Outback

There is nothing severe or dangerous about this image, however the contrast between the red and orange landscape of the Australian Outback and a narrow stripe of clouds was stunning on Aug. 11.

Typhoon Goni Brings 150+ MPH Winds

Goni rapidly intensified on Aug. 23 and brought 150+ mph wind gusts to Japan's far southern Ryukyu Islands. This radar image shows the eye of Goni at that time.

Fall-Like Storm System Brings Snow

Centered in the nation's midsection is a fallish storm system on Aug. 18 that brought snow to the higher elevations of Wyoming and Colorado. Record cold temperatures were recorded behind the storm in the Plains and Midwest. The storm also produced some severe weather in the Plains and Midwest, including tornadoes in parts of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin on Aug. 18.

Wildfire Smoke

Smoky skies were a common occurrence in the Northwest in August due to the widespread wildfire activity. The first image shows a swath of smoke from Washington state to northern Idaho and western Montana on Aug. 20. The second image shows smoke in western Washington and western Oregon on Aug. 22, where air quality was worse than Beijing, China, in some locations at that time.
