Tropics to Turn Quieter Around Australia This Weekend

After being inundated by both tropical cyclones Nathan and Olwyn, Australia will welcome a turn to calmer tropical weather this weekend.
Nathan will push away from northern Queensland through Saturday with its heavy rain, while Olwyn continues to weaken as it tracks farther inland over Western Australia.
Before it weakens and pushes south of Australia Saturday night, Olwyn will remain accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds. Both, however, will bypass Perth to the north and east.
Amounts within the heavy rain band will generally average 25 to 75 mm (1 to 3 inches). More communities to the north of Perth than to the east will record amounts on the higher end of that range.

Some rain will dampen Perth through Saturday, especially early, as winds average 25 to 40 kph (15 to 25 mph) with gusts to 55 kph (35 mph). A shower or two will linger into Sunday.
Conditions were significantly worse in the northwestern corner of Western Australia where Olwyn came onshore.

Winds gusted to 180 kph (112 mph) at the Royal Australian Air Force Base-Learmonth. Around 140 mm (5.50 inches) inundated the area since Wednesday.

CYCLONE OLWYN: Tropical Cyclone Olwyn brought heavy rain to Western Australia on Thursday. Sustained winds reached 110kmh (68mph) near the center, with gusts up to 155kmh (96mph), according to the Bureau of Meteorology. The cyclone was forecast to move south-southwest at 20kmh (12.4mph).

Meanwhile, Nathan dumped 245 mm (9.64 inches) on Weipa in Queenland in the 24 hours ending early Friday morning.
Nathan will strengthen as it pushes away from Australia this weekend and may track toward the same islands that were slammed by dangerous Tropical Cyclone Pam.
