New Storm to Continue Flooding in India and Pakistan

While life-threatening flooding continues across parts of northern India and Pakistan, another storm system will target the same areas with heavy rainfall during the middle of the week.
Flooding has forced many Kashmiris from their homes in areas where flooding killed at least 600 people only six months ago. The storm system responsible for heavy rainfall over the weekend is now moving away; however, the break in wet weather will be short-lived.
A storm system that brought rain and thunderstorms to parts of Turkey and Iran on Monday will shift eastward on Tuesday as rain spreads into Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and northern Pakistan and India.

The river levels across northern Pakistan and India, especially across the Kashmir region, will have no chance to lower before another round of heavy rain inundates the region.
Total rainfall through Friday will average 50-100 mm (2-4 inches) across the region with localized amounts in excess of 150 mm (6 inches).
This rainfall on top of the 50-150 mm (2-6 inches) that fell from near Lahore to Srinagar over the weekend will lead to widespread flooding problems that will last into this weekend.
Islamabad will also be in an area of elevated flooding risk as rain and thunderstorms repeatedly target the city and surrounding areas from Tuesday through Friday. The highest risk appears to be Wednesday and Wednesday night when downpours could lead to travel problems in and around the city.

Kabul will be spared the worst of this storm system; however, rain is still expected at times from Tuesday into Thursday.
While rain will begin to taper off on Friday night, lingering showers and isolated thunderstorms will remain a threat across areas from eastern Afghanistan into northern India through the weekend.
A pause in the widespread stormy pattern is expected next week as high pressure to the west will block any approaching storms from that direction. However, rainfall will still be a thread as isolated showers and thunderstorms will occur across the region daily.
