Weather Underground midday recap for Thursday,January 9,2014
A pair of low pressure systems pushed across the central U.S. on
Thursday, while a ridge high pressure brought blustery conditions to the
Great Lakes and the Northeast.
Winter weather advisories and freezing rain advisories were issued
across parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Thursday as
precipitation associated with a pair of low pressure system approached
the region. The majority of the Great Lakes and Northeast stayed clear
of rain and snow, although cold, blustery conditions associated with a
high pressure system continued to linger across the area. Detroit,
Mich., recorded a midday high of 18 degrees, while Buffalo, N.Y.,
recorded a midday high of 20 degrees.
Meanwhile, active weather pushed across the central portion of the
country on Thursday. An area of low pressure moved over the Missouri
Valley, while a separate area of low pressure pushed across eastern
Texas. These systems initiated wet weather over the southern Plains, and
a mixture of rain and snow over the Tennessee Valley and Ohio Valley.
Out west, snowy weather triggered winter weather advisories across the
Rockies, while a cold front approached the Pacific Northwest. Western
Washington and northwestern Oregon experienced showers throughout
Thursday morning, as Seattle, Wash., reported a midday total of 0.44
inches of rain. The Southwest stayed clear of wet weather due to a ridge
of high pressure along the eastern Pacific.
