Cold conditions swept across the central and eastern thirds of the country on Tuesday, while heavy precipitation drove across the Pacific Northwest.

An arctic air mass continued to impact the northern tier of the country on Tuesday, but also made its way across the Mississippi Valley and into the Southeast. Hard freezing warnings were issued across the Gulf Coast, while wind chill warnings were issued in a handful of northeastern states. Ladysmith, Wis., recorded a morning low of -38 degrees, while International Falls, Minn., recorded a morning low of -26 degrees with a windchill factor of -46 degrees. This cold air mass interacted with warmer waters across the Great Lakes, which triggered lake effect snow in parts of Michigan and New York. Wanakena, N.Y., reported a midday total of 3.50 inches of snow, while Luce, Mich., reported a midday total of 12.0 inches of snow.

Meanwhile, a cold frontal boundary extended from the upper Intermountain West to the central Plains, as light snow pushed through the northern Rockies. Just to the west, a low pressure system ushered heavy rain across Oregon and Washington, while heavy snow impacted the Cascades. Quillayute, Wash., reported a midday total of 0.92 inches of rain. The Southwest stayed clear of wet weather on Tuesday.
