Weather Underground midday recap for Tuesday,August 23,2016

A cold frontal boundary brought active weather to the north central portion of the country on Tuesday, while a separate frontal boundary lingered over the Southeast.

A low pressure system pushed eastward across south central Canada. This system ushered scattered showers and thunderstorms over the northern edge of the northern high Plains. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system stretched southwestward from the northern Plains to the central Rockies. As this frontal boundary transitioned eastward, it generated strong to severe thunderstorms over the northern Plains, the central Plains and parts of the Mississippi Valley. Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued in western Iowa on Tuesday. Hornick, Iowa, recorded wind gusts of 60 mph. Sioux City, Iowa, reported a midday total of 2.45 inches of rain.

Thunderstorm activity continued across the Four Corners as monsoonal moisture streamed over the region. Flash flood watches were issued in southeast Utah and southwest Colorado. Phoenix Deer Valley Airport, Ariz., reported a midday total of 0.37 of an inch of rain. High pressure brought warm and dry weather to most areas west of the Continental Divide. Palm Springs, Calif., recorded a midday high of 97 degrees.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms popped up over the Deep South as a stationary frontal boundary lingered over the region. Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued in southern Georgia. Flood warnings were also issued in southeast Texas and southern Louisiana. Alma, Ga., reported a midday total of 1.09 inches of rain. Lake Charles Regional, La., reported a midday total of 0.57 of an inch of rain.
