Hurricane Andrew was one of the strongest storms to ever make a direct
hit on the United States. When landfall occurred during the early
morning hours of Aug. 24, the National Hurricane Center in Coral Gables
recorded a wind gust to 164 mph. The destruction through the southern
suburbs of Miami was catastrophic. Andrew was one of only three Category
5 hurricanes to have ever hit the United States.
