Severe Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Threaten Midwest Into Midweek

Cold front moves into the Midwest, sparking showers and thunderstorms this week.
A new cold front will push across the Midwest Tuesday into Wednesday, sparking strong to severe thunderstorms in parts of the region. The storms could pack damaging wind gusts and hail, along with heavy rain which may cause flash flooding.

Below is our latest forecast thinking on the timing and magnitude of the severe threats into midweek.

Severe Weather Forecast

Tuesday
  • Forecast: A fairly concentrated area of severe weather will be possible in eastern Nebraska, western Iowa, southwest Minnesota and southeast South Dakota. In addition, heavy rain may cause flooding in a corridor from eastern Nebraska to Iowa and western Illinois through Tuesday night.
  • Threats: Damaging wind gusts and hail will be the main threats, though an isolated tornado or two cannot be ruled out. Flash flooding is also possible.
  • Cities: Omaha, Nebraska | Sioux City, Iowa

Tuesday's Thunderstorm Forecast
Wednesday
  • Forecast: A few severe storms may develop in parts of east Kansas and northwest Missouri. In addition, a larger area from Michigan and Illinois to the central Plains will see general thunderstorms with locally heavy rain that could cause some pockets of flash flooding.
  • Threats: Damaging wind gusts and large hail. Flash flooding is also possible.
  • Cities: Kansas City | Topeka
