It will take until after the middle of April for cold weather to fully relinquish its grip on the northeastern United States.
A southward shift in the polar vortex caused the first weekend in April to feel more like winter with cold and even snow returning from the Great Lakes to the Northeast.
Spring typically features fluctuations between cold and warm air, but the cold air will have the upper hand for the first half of April.
"It appears as though cold weather will continue through the middle of the month," AccuWeather Meteorologist Ed Vallee said.
Residents should not be fooled with temperatures briefly rebounding for a day or two this week.
The milder surge will occur ahead of storm systems that will track across the northeastern U.S. and open the door for more waves of chilly air to pour in from Canada.
There will also be additional opportunities for snow this week, and not just from the clipper system starting this week.

"A strong storm system will bring rain to end the week with perhaps some snow in the Ohio Valley and the Northeast, especially the interior," Vallee said.
"The strength of the cold [that follows for next weekend] will be a bit less intense and not as long-lasting," he continued, "but killing freezing are quite possible in the Midwest, Northeast and extending all the way down into the southern Appalachians."
Gusty winds will also return with next weekend's cold shot, creating even lower AccuWeather RealFeel® temperatures that will have residents once again thinking the calendar was turned back to winter.
The strength of the storm will determine if damaging winds will once again become a concern.
"Temperatures will rebound the following week," Vallee said, but cautioned that residents will have to wait a bit longer for spring warmth to fully take hold.
"Below-normal temperatures will be the theme for the Northeast through approximately the middle of the month before a warmup to end the month."

This
announces the possibility of another poor summer as spring arrives too
late. So why wonder why food prices continue to skyrocket? Farmlands
are too cold in many areas and have not enough time to get sufficiently
warm for seeding, on time for the growth season. Four years in a row,
growth season was considerably shortened, unless using energy-hungry
greenhouses. But energy supplies dwindle dangerously since "mega-cold"
started in 2013. Using so much energy to operate increasingly more
greenhouses is totally unsustainable and will finally jeopardize our
future or even destroy it.

a couple of weeks ago they were saying mild in April

Makes you wonder about the relabiity of climate models that try to predict the weather months or years in advance.

Here
in northeast Oh after the February like monday and tuesday (high of 40F
if we are lucky) we may approach 60F, but that willbe short lived as we
go back to February (upper 30's) on Friday and Saturday with possible
another inch of snow. After that most models are hinting at the
turnaround to at least normal to above around the 13th. I do still think
that thus April will end up at between 2-4F below normal in Cleveland
area, the coldest one since 2007, although not quite as cold as that one
was. Even if the second half of the month is mostly above normal, it
will not be enough to offset the cold of the first 10 days of the month.

notice
that the jet stream stops at southern ONtario. that's where it was
during the recent toronto ice storm....any warmth will be stopped at the
canadian border yet again! This grotesque monstrosity of a cold April
will go into the record books in similar way as February 2015 where I
live. probably at least 5C, or 9 deg F below normal. This is
absolutely insane! in the future, there had better be an insanely hot
month as payback for this weather catastrophe. Last December was pay
back for Feb 2015.

There
is NO climate future in Eastern Canada, as well as there is no water
supply future in California. Both regions will collapse. California
used to be a desert and Eastern Canada used to be like Greenland or
Siberia.

Félix
A. Noël just need to reword your post slightly. California is
becoming a desert and eastern Canada is becoming the new Arctic or
Siberia.

Sounds NORMAL to me

at
least you guys will get warmer weather in the 2nd half of April. where
I live, the only warm days will take place after April 40th.
Works at Fortinos
This
could be one of the top 10 coldest April's on record in the GTA. Early
April and December have basically switched places this 2015-16 season.
Actually I call today February 32nd.
