Severe Thunderstorms, Flooding Rain Possible Late This Week Through the Weekend

April 27,2016
After Tuesday's outbreak of severe storms, more potentially damaging thunderstorms, along with the risk of flash flooding, are expected for the final few days of April.
Early week storm weakens in the East as new storm pushes from Southwest into the Plains late this week.
The energy responsible for the severe weather we saw to start the week will push eastward Thursday while weakening with time. This may result in a few lingering severe storms in parts of the East.
(LATEST NEWS: Early Week Severe Outbreak)
Following quickly behind that system is a southward plunge of the jet stream that will swing through the Southwest and southern Rockies, then punch into the southern Plains by Friday. This will give rise to another organized risk of severe thunderstorms, including possible tornadoes, late this week. In addition, multiple rounds of rainfall could lead to a increased risk of flooding.
Here's an overview of the timing and impacts for the severe threat late this week into the weekend.

Severe Weather Outlook

Thursday
  • Severe Threat Area #1: The chance of a few severe storms may linger in parts of the Southeast, Appalachians and upper Ohio Valley in the afternoon. Localized damaging wind gusts and hail would be the main concerns
  • Cities: Atlanta | Raleigh
  • Severe Threat Area #2: The new upper level system should trigger the formation of thunderstorms in west/north Texas and western/southern Oklahoma Thursday night into early Friday morning. Large hail and damaging wind gusts will be the primary hazards, however a tornado cannot be ruled out.
  • Cities: Abilene, Texas | Dallas-Fort Worth

Thursday Night's Thunderstorm Forecast
Friday
  • The jet stream dip, or at least a significant piece of it, surges east allowing for a potentially more widespread round of severe storms in parts of Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas, possibly extending into southern Arkansas, northern Louisiana and western Mississippi.
  • Threats: Supercell thunderstorms are possible, which could unleash large hail, damaging wind gusts and tornadoes. The magnitude of the tornado threat remains uncertain at this time. Heavy rainfall could cause some flooding, especially in eastern Texas, southeastern Oklahoma, northwestern Louisiana and western Arkansas.
  • Cities: Austin | Dallas-Fort Worth | Oklahoma City

Friday's Thunderstorm Forecast
Saturday
  • Severe thunderstorms may continue in a swath from eastern Kansas, eastern Oklahoma and eastern Texast into the middle/lower Mississippi Valley.
  • Threats: Damaging wind gusts, large hail and perhaps a few tornadoes. How much severe weather there will be remains uncertain given the widespread nature of clouds and rain which may hold down instability. Once again, heavy rainfall also be a concern and could cause flooding in parts of Arkansas, east Texas and Louisiana.
  • Cities: Houston | Little Rock | Shreveport, Louisiana

Saturday's Thunderstorm Forecast
Below is the rainfall forecast through Sunday. The heaviest rain is expected in parts of east Texas, southeast Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. Keep in mind that locally heavier amounts of rain can fall in short periods of time than what is shown on the map.
