Deep freeze to penetrate eastern US in wake of April snow

Following a round of snow across portions of the mid-Atlantic states on Saturday, temperatures will approach record levels across portions of the East on Saturday night.
"Record-low temperatures will be challenged in several locations on Saturday night," AccuWeather Meteorologist Michael Doll said.
Some records that will be challenged date back to the early 1900s.

"The best possible setup for a cold night is expected with clearing skies and a northerly wind flow out of Canada," AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rossio said.
Those attending Saturday night baseball games in Baltimore and New York City will want to bring the winter jackets and gloves as temperatures will fall into the 30s before the end of the game.
Lows tonight will range from the teens across portions of the interior Northeast to the 20s as far south as portions of North Carolina and Tennessee. Lows may reach the freezing mark as far south as Augusta, Georgia, the host of the Masters golf tournament this weekend.
Some locations could have their coldest April night so far.

The coldest spots will likely be across areas with clear skies and fresh snowpack still on the ground from the storm on Saturday. Any lingering wet or slushy areas left in the wake of Saturday's snow will turn icy.
This late-season cold blast could wreak havoc on blooming fruit and flowering trees and those who have already planted their spring flowers and vegetables.
"Precautions should be taken to protect tender vegetation from damage," Doll said.

This late-season cold is definitely a shock to most residents across the East as the spring season started rather mild. Much of the East also endured one of the warmest winters on record.
Temperatures will moderate into the 30s and 40s across the Northeastern states on Sunday to the 50s across the mid-Atlantic and the 60s across the Southeast.
This may end up being the coldest night the East will face until fall as milder air will arrive for the rest of April.
"This will likely be the last blast of extremely cold air this spring across the eastern Great Lakes, mid-Atlantic and Northeast," Doll said.
While there will be a push of cooler air early next week, overnight lows will not be as extreme as Saturday night.
Nonetheless, those across the Northeast will want to hold off on planting any spring flowers, fruit or vegetables until at least next weekend as lows could still reach or fall below the freezing mark next week.
