Tropical Depression Sixteen-E Makes Second, Final Landfall in Mexico

September 21,2015
  • Tropical Depression Sixteen-E formed Sunday evening in the eastern Pacific Ocean about 90 miles west of Cabo San Lazaro, Mexico.
  • It made its first landfall shortly before 11 p.m. PDT Sunday on the central part of Mexico's Baja California peninsula.
  • After crossing the Gulf of California, it made a second and final landfall around sunrise Monday near Bahia Kino, Sonora, in the northwestern part of Mexico's mainland.
  • At 9 a.m. MDT Monday, the center of the depression was 160 miles from the border between Arizona and Mexico.
  • The depression is expected to weaken and dissipate by tonight.
  • However, if it makes it past the U.S. border while still a tropical cyclone, it would be the first tropical cyclone to move into Arizona fully intact since Nora in 1997, and only the seventh on record.
  • Moisture from the system is expected to be drawn northward into portions of the Southwestern U.S. early this week.
