A cold front will extend across the Southeast on Thursday, while a ridge of high pressure will build over the West Coast.
A cold frontal boundary will move east southeastward over the southern Mid-Atlantic, the Southeast and the eastern Gulf Coast. This frontal boundary will interact with an onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico. Rain and thunderstorms will continue to fire up over portions of the Gulf Coast and the Southeast. A mixture of rain and freezing rain will develop behind the cold front, affecting the lower Mississippi Valley, the Deep South, the eastern Tennessee Valley and the southern Mid-Atlantic. In addition, a mixture of freezing rain and snow will impact the middle Mississippi Valley, the western Tennessee Valley, the Ohio Valley, the northern Mid-Atlantic and southern New England. The heaviest snow showers are forecast to develop from the northern Mid-Atlantic to southeast Massachusetts.
Meanwhile, an arctic high pressure system will sink southward over the Plains and the upper Midwest. Temperatures will drop 15 to 30 degrees below March standards across the Plains, the Midwest and parts of the Northeast.
Further to the west, a ridge of high pressure will remain parked over the West Coast. This system will keep weather conditions dry across the Pacific Northwest, the Intermountain West, the Great Basin and the Southwest on Thursday.
