NYC: Snowstorm, Freeze-Up to Precede Thaw

New York City will lie within a 1,500-mile swath of snow, slippery roads and travel disruptions for a time on Thursday.
The snow and cold plunge that follow the storm will precede noticeably less-cold conditions next week that will allow considerable melting of the snow in the region.
Cold air will catch up to lingering moisture in such a way as to bring a period of sleet, snow and a freeze-up on Thursday.

Enough snow to shovel and plow is likely with the heaviest amount of snow falling south of the city.
Crews are encouraged to quickly clean up the snow Thursday, as areas of slush and standing water will freeze solid Thursday night.

Motorists and pedestrians should be prepared for leftover areas of ice into Friday morning.

A pattern change will begin this weekend and get into full swing next week. The pattern will lock out invasions of arctic air.
While conditions far from a heat wave are forecast next week, temperatures will trend to near normal next week with highs forecast to average in the middle 40s. Some chilly nights are still anticipated.
Area rivers will have to be watched for possible ice jams with the upcoming warmer weather forecast.
Until all of the piles of snow are gone, there will be issues with patchy black ice during the nighttime and early morning hours.
