Midweek Cold Air to Spur Icy Mix in South

People in the Southeast may come down with cases of spring fever early this week before a dose of wintry weather returns to the region.
Following a warm and showery day on Tuesday, colder air will press into the region on Wednesday into Thursday.
While the cold air will not be as extreme as outbreaks during February, it will be cold enough to cause significant travel problems as wintry precipitation breaks out.
Travel conditions will deteriorate throughout the day on Wednesday from Dallas to Nashville and Pittsburgh as snow and an icy mix causes slippery roads and flight delays.

This zone of icy weather will continue to push south and east by the start of Thursday, reaching toward Shreveport, Louisiana; Jackson, Mississippi; Huntsville, Alabama; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Richmond, Virginia.
Thursday morning's commute could be one of the worst times to travel across the Southeast due to the time that the sleet and freezing rain arrive in the region.
Along much of the Interstate-85 corridor, the cold air is not forecast to move in fast enough to cause icy conditions from Montgomery, Alabama, and Atlanta to Greenville, South Carolina, and Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh, North Carolina. However, areas of rain and fog could slow travel down in this swath.

While the sleet and freezing rain advances south and east, snow will continue to fall from Pennsylvania to northeastern Texas with the heaviest snow focusing over Kentucky and West Virginia.
Upwards of 6 inches of snow could be seen in this area between Wednesday and Thursday before dry conditions move in for Thursday night.
The chill brought by this system is forecast to linger through the end of the week before temperatures moderate over the weekend.

Temperatures are not expected to climb quite as high as they do ahead of the wintry weather but should run within a few degrees of normal for early March.
