Flooding Threat for France, Italy and Western Balkans

A potent storm system will bring heavy rain and flooding problems to southern France, Italy and western parts of the Balkan Peninsula through midweek with some snow possible in the highest elevations of the Alps.
A cold front will blasted from southern parts of the United Kingdom through France Monday into Tuesday. At the same time, an area of low pressure developed along the cold front near the border of France and Spain.
This area of low pressure will track eastward across the northern Mediterranean through Wednesday then stall over northern Italy on Thursday.
This will result in periods of heavy rain for southeastern France and western Italy, reaching as far inland as southern and western Switzerland through the day on Wednesday.
Nice, France, has already reported 100 mm (4 inches) of rain and these downpours will continue into at least Wednesday.

Cities of Marseille, Lyon, Nice and Monaco in France can also expect substantial rainfall. The heavy rain will also shift into cities in western Italy, including Genoa, Turin and Milan.
Rainfall amounts through Wednesday are expected between 50 and 100 mm (2 to 4 inches). Some downpours, however, could bring as much as 150 mm (6 inches) in some areas.
Flash flooding appears to be the greatest threat for the region, although enough rain could fall in some places to make landslides possible.

Snow will fall across the higher elevations of the region, with significant snowfall expected at elevations above 1,370 meters (4,500 feet).
This storm system will then shift farther south and east, bringing locally heavy rain central and southern Italy, as well as the western Balkan Peninsula.
Areas from Slovenia southward into Croatia can see localized flooding on Thursday and Friday as the storm system slowly moves eastward.
Another potent storm system will take a similar track next week which could bring another round of flooding to similar areas.
