Unsettled weather will persist across the western half of the country on Sunday, while strong thunderstorms are expected across the Gulf Coast.
A low pressure system will move east southeastward over the Intermountain West and the northern Plains. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system will extend south southwestward. Light to moderate rain will develop across the lower elevations of the Rockies and the Great Basin, while high elevation snow showers are forecast for the region. Snow showers will continue to impact the higher elevations of the Cascades, while an onshore flow from the Pacific will usher rain across western Washington and western Oregon. Conditions will remain mostly clear across the Southwest on Sunday due to a ridge of high pressure over the eastern Pacific.
Meanwhile, an onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico will initiate strong to severe thunderstorms across a handful of states, stretching from the western Gulf Coast and the lower Mississippi Valley to the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. Severe thunderstorms will be possible across Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, northern Florida, Georgia, eastern south Carolina and eastern North Carolina. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail and dangerous straight line wind. In addition, heavy rain will bring a threat of flash flooding to central Georgia, southern South Carolina and coastal North Carolina. Just to the north, mixed precipitation will be possible over the upper Mississippi Valley, while light rain will develop across the Ohio Valley, the Great Lakes and the Northeast. .
