The Super Outbreak of tornadoes which began exactly 40 years ago on this
date was caused by the combination of a strong upper-level storm system
and the influx of warm, humid air. A total of 148 confirmed tornadoes
struck 13 states during the course of two days. A total of 319 people
were killed due to the outbreak.
