As transition to fall continues in South America, a powerful storm with the threat for flooding to much of central and northern Argentina will affect the regions through Tuesday. In the Buenos Aires area, torrential downpours will bring the threat for flash flooding as 50 mm (2 inches) of rain could fall in just a few hours.
Rain is very common in central and northern Argentina during the months of March and April as the fall season begins. Rainfall in March totaled over 5 inches (130 mm) in Buenos Aires with an additional 75 mm (1.50 inches) falling during the first week of April.

A rapidly strengthening area of low pressure and associated cold front will bring widespread 25-75 mm (1-3) rainfall to central and northern Argentina through Tuesday afternoon. The heaviest rainfall, totaling 75-150 mm (3-6 inches), is expected to impact areas west and south of Buenos Aires.
Some of the most fertile crop lands in Argentina will receive the heaviest rainfall from this storm which could delay harvesting of crops that are still in the fields.
Due to the unusual strength of this storm, severe weather will also be a threat as a powerful cold front moves through northern Argentina. Thunderstorms will be capable of producing torrential downpours, damaging winds and hail. Areas most likely to see severe thunderstorms on Monday include Rosario and Sante Fe.
Improving weather is expected across northern and northeast Argentina, including Buenos Aires, on Tuesday as the heaviest rainfall pushes through Uruguay and into southeast Brazil.
A period of dry and comfortable weather will follow this storm across central and northern Argentina, lasting into the weekend.
