Flood Threat Remains for Philippines From Peipah

Despite Peipah weakening, the threat for widespread flash flooding still exists across the Philippines.
The strength of Peipah dropped to a tropical depression Sunday night local time (midday Sunday EDT).
However, Peipah could again become a minimal tropical storm before reaching the Philippines. Regardless of strength, the primary concern for the Philippines will be flooding rainfall.

Peipah is expected to slow in forward speed this week as the center of circulation will not reach the southeast Philippines until Friday at the earliest.
This slow movement will lead to several days of locally heavy rainfall across the region, with northeast Mindanao and eastern Visayas bearing the brunt of the storm.
Worsening the situation is the concern that Peipah will then stall in the vicinity of eastern Visayas into the weekend. Flooding will become a more widespread problem if this occurs as torrential rain will continue over the same areas for several days. Mudslides may ensue in the higher terrain.

"At this point, it looks as if rainfall this week in some locations will approach 200 mm (8 inches) with an average of 25 to 75 mm (1 to 3 inches) being the most common," stated AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Anthony Sagliani.
Only isolated wind damage problems will unfold as Peipah is expected to remain in a weakened state as it approaches the Philippines.
It is also not out of the question that Peipah stalls or significantly slows its forward progress before reaching the Philippines. That would delay the arrival of the heavy rain and flood threat to later in the week.
Meteorologist Eric Leister contributed to this story.
