On this date back in 1994, Hurricane John reached Category 5 strength (175-mph winds) well south of the Hawaiian Islands. John was the longest-surviving and longest-tracking tropical cyclone in the Pacific. Fortunately, John remained at sea, and there were no reported fatalities.
