Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, August 5,2013.
Unsettled weather picked up in the nation's mid-section on Monday as a
trough of low pressure dipped from Canada into the Northern Plains and
the Upper Midwest. Showers and thunderstorms were expected to increase
in coverage from the Northern Plains into the Upper Great Lakes and
parts of the Ohio Valley through the day. A few storms in southeastern
Minnesota, western Wisconsin, and Iowa had the potential to produce
isolated areas of large hail, damaging wind gusts, and possibly a weak,
brief tornado. Severe weather also became possible across portions of
the Central and Northern Plains on Monday with primary risks of large
hail and damaging winds. Meanwhile to the south, moisture pooling along a
disturbance extending across the Central and Southern Plains stirred up
more rain and thunderstorm activity across southeast Kansas and
southwest Missouri. Heavy rainfall totals were expected for areas of
southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri and maintained flood and flash
flood concerns throughout the region.
Elsewhere, cool, fall-like weather continued for the Midwest and the
Northeast, while showers and thunderstorms continued in Florida. In the
West, scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms were expected in the
Southwest as the region\'s monsoon persists.
