Flooding in Iowa Prompts Water Rescues, Evacuations; Turkey River Tops Record

August 24,2016
Major flooding prompted water rescues in northeast Iowa early Wednesday morning after up to 7 inches of rain fell during heavy thunderstorms.
According to a Facebook post by the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office, the Fort Atkinson Trailer Park was being evacuated, due to high water. The department is urging residents "to seek shelter with friends, family or at the community center."
Reports submitted to the National Weather Service (NWS) say that water rescues occurred in Freeport and Waukton. The NWS said that Freeport, Spillville, Bluffton, Decorah and Fort Atkinson have all been hard hit by the flooding and issued a flash flood emergency. Evacuations were underway in Freeport, according to the Courier in Waterloo.
NWS said the flooding "will worsen or continue for the day." Residents were urged to avoid travel in the area.
At least one basement reportedly collapsed due to the floodwaters in Calmar.
Winneshiek and Allamakee county officials said several roads were washed out and that sandbagging was underway in Spillville and Fort Atkinson, according to the Associated Press.
Record flooding has occurred on the Turkey River in Spillville after it rose above 19 feet.
