Weather Underground midday recap for Thursday,August 25,2016

A frontal system shifted over the central third of the country on Thursday, while high pressure brought above normal temperatures to the Northwest.

A cold frontal boundary extended southwestward across southeast Canada, the Great Lakes, the middle Mississippi Valley and the southern Plains. Showers and thunderstorms developed along and near this frontal boundary over parts of the Northeast, the Midwest, the middle Mississippi Valley and the southern Plains. Flood watches were issued in central Oklahoma. Flood warnings were also issued for parts of Iowa and Illinois. Quincy, Ill., reported a midday total of 1.65 inches of rain. Manhattan, Kan., reported a midday total of 1.39 inches of rain. Tropical moisture and daytime heating also lead to the development of rain and thunderstorms across the lower Mississippi Valley and the western Gulf Coast. Flood warnings and flood advisories were issued in portions of southeast Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. Galliano, La., reported a midday total of 1.24 inches of rain. Additionally, heat advisories were issued for eastern Arkansas, northwest Mississippi and western Tennessee. Columbus Air Force Base, Miss., recorded a midday high of 93 degrees with a heat index of 110 degrees.

Monsoonal thunderstorms continued to affect the Four Corners and the eastern Great Basin. Flash flood warnings were issued in south central Utah, while flood advisories were issued in northeast Arizona. High pressure kept most areas west of the Continental Divide warm and dry. Temperatures jumped 10 to 20 degrees above normal across western Oregon and western Washington.
