September to start on cooler, less humid note in northeastern US

Brief relief from heat and humidity will arrive in the northeastern United States at the start of September.
Highs will dip between 5 and 10 degrees Fahrenheit below average at the peak of the cooldown from Thursday into the weekend. Humidity levels will lower significantly.
"A cold front will cut into the hot air baking the Northeast later this week," according to AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams.
Prior to the front's arrival, daytime temperatures most days will remain in the upper 80s to low 90s along the Interstate-95 corridor, with low to mid-80s across the interior Northeast through Wednesday. Humidity levels will remain high.
Another weak cold front will trim the heat and humidity for one day early this week, but such relief will be very brief.
In the stronger front's wake, a rush of cooler and drier air will dive southeastward from Canada and deliver a "true taste of fall" to the region later this week, according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rathbun.

Temperatures may fall to even cooler levels than during the heat relief from Aug. 21-23 in places such as Syracuse and New York City, New York; Burlington, Vermont; Portland, Maine; Boston; Pittsburgh; Baltimore; and Washington, D.C.
Highs will dip into the mid-60s to mid-70s across New England and the interior Northeast, with upper 70s to low 80s in store from New York City southward to Washington, D.C.
"The last time it was this cool was in early to mid-June," Rathbun explained.
The front will also be responsible for helping to steer Tropical Depression 8 away from the Northeast.
Those headed to the beach during the extended holiday weekend should not have to worry about wet weather ruining their plans from Friday into at least Sunday.
"Plenty of sunshine will make for beautiful afternoons for outdoor activities," Rathbun stated.

The weather will be perfect for fans headed to baseball games or preseason football games across the region.
Warm afternoons will precede cool and mainly clear overnights, with lows falling into the 40s and 50s in most areas, Rathbun explained.
Those who are not accustomed to such temperatures in the wake of the summer warmth may need to bring along a jacket for any evening outdoor activities.
Residents hoping for an extended cooldown will be out of luck as warmer and more humid air will gradually creep northward during the latter half of Labor Day weekend.
Beyond Labor Day weekend, several more surges of summer warmth could be the theme for much of September in the Northeast.
