Weekly wrap-up: 4 injured by Alabama tornado; Powerful Storm Jake blasts across UK

A storm system triggered strong thunderstorms from Louisiana to Kentucky on Tuesday. Four people were injured in west Jefferson County, Alabama, and 12 homes sustained major damage following a tornado, AL.com reported.
Over 5,000 customers were without power in Alabama late on Tuesday night, according to Alabama Power.

A snowstorm pushed through the Midwest and parts of Canada from Tuesday into Wednesday. According to FlightStats, over 600 flights were canceled out of Chicago O'Hare International Airport as quick-hitting, heavy snow reached the city during the midday hours.
In Buffalo, New York, freezing rain created treacherous travel and resulted in three separate 10-car pileups.

Gusty storms targeted the Northwest this week, causing as many as 75,000 customers to lose power in western Washington Tuesday afternoon, according to King 5 in Seattle.

Storm Jake became the latest winter storm to impact Ireland and the United Kingdom this winter. The 10th named storm of the season by the UK Met Office brought powerful wind gusts, snow showers and stirred up rough seas.
The storm produced wind gusts near 60 mph (97 km/h) in Cornwall, England and Pembrey, Wales. A wind gust of 81 mph (130 km/h) was reported in Aberdaron.
Wales Online reported that several hundred homes had lost power and numerous roads were closed due to fallen trees.

Elsewhere around the world, a 7.8 earthquake struck off the Indonesian island off Sumatra, triggering tsunami warnings. The warnings were later lifted and no damage or casualties were reported, according to the Associated Press.
