A robust area of low pressure will brush across the East Coast on Friday, while a Pacific cold front shifts over the West Coast.
A strong low pressure system will move north northeastward from the southern Mid-Atlantic to the coast of New England. This system will pack gusty winds and a mixture of rain and snow as it passes over the Mid-Atlantic. The strongest precipitation is expected to develop over eastern North Carolina and eastern Virginia. During the second half of the day, light to moderate snow will spread across portions of New England. The heaviest snow will stay offshore of Maine.
Meanwhile, a trough of low pressure will dive southeastward across south central Canada and the upper Mississippi Valley. A mixture of rain, freezing rain and snow will affect the eastern edge of the Dakotas and the western half of the Midwest. Freezing rain is forecast for eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.
Out west, a cold frontal boundary will approach the Pacific Northwest and northern California. Moderate to heavy rain will develop ahead of this frontal system over parts of western Washington, western Oregon and northern California. Strong winds will impact western facing slopes along the Cascades. High wind watches are in place for the northern tier of California and south central Oregon. High elevation snow showers are also forecast to develop across the Sierra Nevada and the northern Cascades.
