South Remains at Risk for Severe Weather into Monday

Violent thunderstorms and even tornadoes will continue to threaten the Deep South. The severe weather danger will center on the Southeast and Ohio Valley on Monday.
Sunday started with strong thunderstorms rumbling across eastern Texas and northern Louisiana. Golf ball-sized hail pounded Hudson, Texas, earlier Sunday, the 911 call center reported.
Severe thunderstorms will now continue to increase in coverage across extreme southeastern Texas, Louisiana and southern Mississippi through Sunday evening.
The threat zone will expand across more of Mississippi, Alabama and the far western Florida Panhandle Sunday night.

The above graphic shows when the severe weather threat will commence in a given community. The danger may persist into the following time period.
Within this zone lies Beaumont and Houston, Texas; Lake Charles, Baton Rouge and New Orleans, La., Jackson, Tupelo and Biloxi, Miss., Birmingham and Mobile, Ala., and Pensacola, Fla.
PGA golfers and spectators at the Shell Houston Open may be forced to seek shelter for a time from the violent thunderstorms.

The strongest thunderstorms through Sunday evening will be capable of producing damaging winds, hail and flooding downpours.
There is also significant concern for tornadoes to touch down and potentially cause destruction.
With the tornado danger encompassing the nighttime hours, residents are urged to plan ahead to make sure weather radios and alarms on other communication devices are turned on so that vital warnings are not missed.

Triggering the severe weather will be the same storm system set to spread soaking rain across the rest of the East and parts of the Midwest through Tuesday.
Monday through Monday evening, more of northern Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and southern and eastern North Carolina will become the target of severe thunderstorms.

This includes Pensacola, Tallahassee and Jacksonville, Fla., Montgomery, Ala., Atlanta, Albany and Savannah, Ga., Columbia and Charleston, S.C., and Raleigh, Charlotte and Fayetteville, N.C.
The threat zone also encompasses Augusta National, Ga., where practice rounds for the 2014 Masters start on Monday.
While damaging winds and flooding downpours will be the primary threats on Monday, a couple of tornadoes may still occur. That is especially true in the vicinity of the Florida Panhandle.
A separate zone of severe thunderstorms with hail and damaging winds will target the upper Ohio Valley, including eastern Kentucky, southern Ohio and western West Virginia.

Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio, Lexington, Ky., and Huntington and Charleston, W.Va., lie within this zone.
Gusty and/or drenching thunderstorm on Tuesday will be confined to central and southern Florida as cooler air presses across the rest of the East.
