Hurricane Mitch caused devastating flooding and mudslides over Mexico
and parts of Central America late in October of 1998. Over 19,000 people
were killed by the storm, which reached Category 5 strength in the
western Caribbean on Oct. 26. Mitch was the second strongest October
hurricane on record.
