Hurricane Hazel roared up the Eastern Seaboard on Oct. 15,1954. The
storm obliterated the North Carolina coast with an 18-foot storm surge
and winds up to 150-mph. Myrtle Beach, S.C., recorded a peak wind gust
of 106-mph, while winds gusted to 113-mph at the Battery in New York
City. Hazel was responsible for 95 deaths in the United States.
