Before the howling winds, shorter days and snow of winter arrives, autumn offers one final chance to get out and enjoy some golf.
Autumn weather is nearly perfect to hit the links for 9 or a full 18 holes of golf. Weather is generally comfortably warm during the afternoon through mid-October across most of the central, northern and eastern U.S.
Long-pants and a sweater should be enough clothes to keep you warm, but carry a jacket to break some of those chilly breezes common later in the season. Take along a camera too; your local golf course may offer spectacular views of the autumn foliage.
The South, Desert Southwest and West Coast has ideal golf weather through October, with Florida and the Southwest seeing great golf weather heading into the winter months. These locations have daytime temperatures that reach into the 70s and 80s. Florida may still see a few thunderstorms, so be sure to keep an eye on the sky if the forecast calls for a thunderstorm chance.
Great long weekend deals that include airfare, accommodations and a round of golf can be had this time of the year if you can swing it on your schedule.
The hours of daylight are getting shorter throughout the season, so keep that in mind when booking tee times. A late-afternoon round of golf that could easily be completed in summer would be finished in darkness as the sun sets earlier in autumn. Be sure to check local sunset times to make sure a round can be completed.
If your plans take you outdoors, make sure that you download WeatherBug on your smart phone or tablet. The mobile apps now include Spark Lightning Alerts, a GPS-based lightning detection feature providing you the location of the closest lightning strike, so you can Know Before the storm hits.
