The coldest air of this early autumn season is continuing to send chills into the South, Southeast, and Mid-Atlantic. The season`s first freeze will hit somes places in the Deep South, interior Southeast, and southern Mid-Atlantic overnight and early Saturday.
This early-season burst of cold air is the result of building high pressure settling across the Mississippi Valley. This high pressure, with origins in central Canada, has brought crisp and dry air deep into the South, lower Mississippi Valley and across the East Coast. A cloudless sky, calm winds, and the longer late-October nights will cause temperatures to plummet once again.
Widespread upper 20s and lower 30s are expected, likely ending the growing season for much of the Mid-South, Ohio and Tennessee Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Carolinas. If you can, save your potted plants by bringing them inside this evening or covering them with a light, breathable fabric or even newspaper - but be sure to do that before you go to bed.
Widespread Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories stretch from the Florida Panhandle to Maine. This includes Memphis and Nashville, Tenn., Montgomery, Ala., Atlanta, Charlotte, N.C., Florence, S.C., Richmond, Va., Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Dover, Del., Philadelphia, the lower Hudson Valley, Bridgeport, Conn., and Portland, Maine.
Locations farther to the north of all these locations are also going to be below freezing, but have been spared additional warnings as the growing season has come to an end there already.
